WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: late

Weather conditions:

Season was a few days late judging from conditions in Cambridge Bay. No major snowfalls occurred from 20 to 28 June, though snow/sleet/rain squalls occurred almost daily, and this period was also more windy than usual.

Season temperature: cold
Season humidity:
Date of 50% snow-cover:
Date of ice-break on rivers:
Date of final loss of snow: 23 June

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Arctic Foxes, Snowy Owls, Long-tailed, Arctic and Pomarine Skuas and Rough-legged Buzzards were rare, but Artcic Foxes bred.

Rodent dynamics:

We observed lots of evidence of winter lemming activity, but very few live lemmings were seen.

Rodent species recorded:

Summary of fauna studies:

We were conducting tests of the Arctic Shorebird Monitoring Program. Plot densities of shorebirds and passerines were calculated but sample size was too small to estimate densities for the whole study area. We continue the study in 2002 and will publish densities and estimated population for Kent Peninsula in the fall of 2002.
